Extraordinary dialogue of Frank Herbert and Wojciech Siudmak
Extraordinary dialogue of Frank Herbert and Wojciech Siudmak

Painting and literature are mutually complementary. There are many examples of this cross-media relationship. Gustave Doré illustrated the Bible and William Blake depicted scenes from Milton's Paradise Lost. In the 20th century, an artistic collaboration united Frank Herbert, author of the Dune saga of novels, with Wojciech Siudmak, the most prominent Polish painter associated with the fantasy realism current.

‘Dune is undoubtedly a masterpiece of literature,’ wrote Siudmak, ’it is one of those giant columns supporting the vault of the Pantheon containing the most precious heritage of world culture. The spiritual tradition from with which Herbert drew also influenced Siudmak's imagination. Visions of the desert landscapes of the Arrakis planet, where the plot of Dune is set, have gained timeless visual representations in his paintings. The book edition of the saga, enriched with breathtaking illustrations, is the proof of this claim. It is not without reason that Denis Villeneuve - director of the Oscar-winning film adaptation of Herbert's novel - has portrayed the world of Dune as it has been interpreted by the Polish painter.

The limited edition of the six volumes of the Dune saga and the original incographies by Wojciech Siudmak can be found in both the stationary galleries and the DESA Modern online shop. Each work comes in a closed edition, bearing an individual number and the artist's signature.
