Jerzy Nowosielski (1923-2011) - one of the most fascinating contemporary Polish painters, draftsman, set designer, author of numerous theoretical works on icons and painting, distinguished thinker and Orthodox theologian. In 1940, he began his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Krakow. Since 1944, he has been a member of the Polish Academy of Learning. He was a member of the Young Artists Group and the Krakow Group. From 1962 to 1993, he worked as a full-time academic teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts (ASP). He was awarded the title of full professor in 1985. Until 1993, he led the painting studio. In 1996, together with his wife Zofia, he established the Nowosielski Foundation, which aims to support outstanding achievements of Polish culture through scholarships and annual awards. He is the author of numerous polychromes in churches (including the Church of the Holy Spirit in Nowe Tychy, the church in Wesoła near Warsaw, the Lourdes Church in France) and iconostases (including the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Krakow). The artist's works are held in numerous museum collections in Poland and private collections (USA, Canada, France, Germany). In 1993, he was awarded the Grand Prize of the Foundation for Culture for outstanding achievements in the field of culture, and in 2000, he received an honorary doctorate from Jagiellonian University.
