Rafał Olbinski - Madame Butterfly
Description
On a hill near the Japanese port of Nagasaki, the wedding of a young lieutenant of the American Navy, Pinkerton, is to take place with a geisha Cho-Cho-San named by him Butterfly. This is how the story begins in Giacomo Puccini's 1904 opera. Olbiński's painting was originally created almost a hundred years later, in 2000. The co-creator of the Polish school of posters uses here a graphic representation of the title character. He has always drawn from culture and art, reusing familiar motifs and giving them new value. We can find a connection between Italian opera music and his work. In this respect, it is characteristic to combine fantasy with realistic imagination, as well as depicting romantic relationships.
