In 1911, a young Tamara moved from Warsaw to Saint Petersburg. She came under the care of her relatives, Stefa and Maurycy Stifer, who made sure she was culturally well-versed. She frequented the Mariinsky Theatre and the palace complex in Tsarskoye Selo. A few years later, at a ball hosted for the Russian aristocracy, Tamara met a young Polish lawyer, Tadeusz Łempicki. The two were married in 1916, under the vaulted ceiling of the Chapel of the Order of Malta in Saint Petersburg.
Tamara Łempicka painted an oil portrait of her husband in 1928. It's a piece that draws out the color palette from the most challenging of hues — black. The sheen of his double-breasted coat and the glossy surface of his top hat echo the cold glint of mirrored skyscrapers looming behind him. Tadeusz’s neck is tightly wrapped in a white scarf, his left hand tucked into a glove. He’s a man of secrets — his eyes are rimmed with redness and his gaze is enigmatic, with lips frozen somewhere between a grimace and a smirk.
This work proves that true mastery in painting lies in the ability to capture human character.
Shortly after completing the portrait, Łempicka left her husband.
The giclée was produced in a limited edition of 100 copies.
