Jan Dobkowski - Contestation
Description
The first of the red and green canvases, "Double Girl" from 1968, was purchased for the collection by the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The whole series of paintings in this color scheme was created a year later and was painted in a uniform format of 2 mx 1.5 m. Jan Dobkowski is one of the most famous painters of the second half of the last century in Polish contemporary art. In "Contestation", as in the other works from this series, he uses intense green symbolizing nature and vitality, as well as blood red. In fact, apart from the silhouettes of two women and the title suggesting opposition, nothing is clear. In this case, any interpretation referring to the uninhibited language of eroticism that Dobkowski uses will turn out to be right!
