The painting La Musicienne was first presented in 1930 at the 41st exhibition of the Parisian Société des Artistes Indépendants. A few months later, it appeared on the cover of the German magazine Die Dame. The early 1930s marked the rise of Tamara Łempicka as a star on the stage of 20th-century art. The model for the piece was Ira Perrot, a close friend of the artist.

As a young woman, Tamara Łempicka was deeply fascinated by the works of Renaissance masters. La Musicienne fits squarely into the centuries-old tradition of allegorical painting. It portrays not just a beautiful woman, but music itself, personified. The abstract idea reveals itself in the delicate hands plucking a mandolin. Beneath the sheer blue fabric of her dress, the form of the model’s body is softly outlined. Ira Perrot’s fiery red hair balances the cool tones of the composition. In the background, the sharp silhouettes of New York City's skyscrapers pierce the skyline.
