Description

THE EDWARD DWURNIK "MOMENTS" COLLECTION INCLUDES: BEFORE, PLEASE, FREE SOUP

In the series Moment, Edward Dwurnik presented the everyday life of Poles in the times of the People's Republic of Poland, showing their routine activities and mundane duties. As he himself says , " [ ...] I painted (a Pole - editor's note) how he would get up in the morning, go to work, do something there, eat lunch during the break, come back home, go out with friends, smoke cigarettes, hit on a girl , drink , he was ill, he traded, he was scheming, he went on holiday.”. His reporter's style, combined with brilliance and love for details, allowed him to faithfully convey the atmosphere of nostalgia and stuffiness of those times.

The series "Moment", consisting of 20 canvases, was a precursor to his most famous series - "Athletes". Dwurnik gave titles to works that were usually not meant to be taken literally. At the same time, they were inscribed in the composition itself and constituted a sarcastic form of stage directions for the presented scenes. The works "Free soup", "Here you go" and "Before" are a confirmation that art is an inseparable part of our history, and at the same time a form of recording it.

Edward Dwurnik (1943-2018) - one of the most outstanding painters of Polish contemporary art, who achieved international success before the political transformation in Poland , thanks to his participation in the prestigious exhibition of modern art "documenta 7" in Kassel (1982). He was inspired by the works of Bernard Buffet, but the works of Nikifor Krynicki had the greatest influence on his work since 1965 . He closed his painting in cycles, the most famous of which are The Road (Ten Stations of Secular Crucifixion), Athletes, Workers, Warsaw and Hitch-hiking. His output includes over 4.5 thousand paintings, 3.5 thousand watercolors and about 13 thousand drawings.
