Paweł Kowalewski - studied at the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1978 to 1983, where he graduated with honors in the studio of Stefan Gierowski. Since 1985, he has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Design at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he obtained the title of professor in 2019. He was the co-founder of Grupa, the most famous Polish artistic formation of the 1980s, which he created together with Ryszard Grzyb, Jarosław Modzelewski, Włodzimierz Pawlak, Marek Sobczyk, and Ryszard Woźniak. Grupa's activities can be described as a rebellion against academism and avant-garde attitudes in art, as well as a protest against censorship and repression by the communist authorities during the martial law introduced in 1981. www.pawelkowalewski.pl Kowalewski perceived the reality of that difficult moment in the times of the Polish People's Republic as absurd and grotesque. From 1984 to 1989, he wrote satirical texts for the Grupa magazine "Oj dobrze już," including under the pseudonym of the imaginary American journalist Sharm Yarn.
